For Conservatives
No one has to take a political-ideology test before joining Canadians Defending Democracy or CRUSH. You only have to believe that the Harper Government has lost the moral authority to govern and, therefore, deserves to be unseated. We have never polled our members, but they probably come from across the political spectrum.
This raises a dilemma for people who most appropriately fit under a small-c conservative label. Their most natural political home may be the Conservative Party of Canada. Yet, for whatever reason, they feel that the current Conservative Government is not serving Canada well. If you are one of these people, what should you do to bring in a better government?
That is a tough question. This group is all about democracy, so you are going to have to make your own choices about what course of action to take, but here are a few suggestions for your consideration:
- If you are a member of the Conservative Party, but you feel so strongly about the impropriety of the current government’s actions that you are uncomfortable with your membership and the support that it implies, resign and tell them that you will rejoin when the party has a more democratic leadership at the helm.
- Alternatively, keep your membership, but work hard to call for a leadership review and then work even harder to change the leader and bring in one that will act in a more democratic manner. This will, undoubtedly, be easier if the Conservative Party is on the opposition benches at the time, but helping to effect the required change will require your active membership in the party regardless of its status in Parliament.
- If you have donated funds to the Conservative Party in the past, refuse to make a contribution this time and be sure to tell the party why you are holding back.
- This suggestion is likely too extreme for most people who believe in conservative ideals, but if it would not go too far against your political ideals, consider taking the amount you would have given to the Conservative Party and splitting it among the opposition parties. By distributing the funds, none of the opposition parties will become too rich from your generosity, but you will be contributing to their ability to defeat the Harper Government. If you follow this strategy, be sure to tell the parties that you are giving them money solely to help them defeat the Harper Government and you do not support their other policies.
If your political philosophy is such that you can’t contribute to the opposition parties, we humbly ask that you consider taking the money that you were going to give to the Conservative Party and donating it to the www.unseatharper.ca campaign instead so we can continue to run our newspaper ads.
